Saving the Lemon Lily!

July 18, 2012

A little bluegrass music and a little yellow flower means just one thing is coming: The 3rd Annual Lemon Lily Festival in Idyllwild!

July 21-22, come and learn about the lily, dance to bluegrass music, taste the smells, hike the trails, play in Pioneer town, create art and connect with your friends and neighbors.

This year the festival is focusing on the education and restoration of the Lemon Lily through classes, garden tours and the selling of the seeds and plants.

The Taste of Idyllwild features recipes inspired by this flower from local restaurants. A local brewmeister also created a beer called “Lemon Lily Honey Cristalweizen” and this light beer is definitely something you will want to try!

15 local artists created hand-painted banners, hung throughout Idyllwild, to vamp up this exciting event. These banners were painted with a two week time frame and where judged as well. After the festival the banners will be auctioned off with the proceeds being split between the artist and planning for next year’s festival.

At the end of the weekend, you could be the lucky winner of one of four gift baskets for raffle containing gift certificates, products, inn stays and food!

You will fall in love with the Lemon Lily and of course, the bluegrass tunes. For more information on this fun and unique festival, click here.

These two Shakespearean plays will alternate weekends, with showings Thursday through Saturday beginning at 7:30pm, and Sunday showings at 5:30pm. So take your pick on which classic tale you want to see first!

Hamlet: July 22, 27, 28, 29, August 10, 11

These masterpieces will excite you with their poetry, acting and costumes in this perfect setting of an 1895 Victorian house where the porch and balcony become the stage. You can even arrive early to picnic in the vineyard and taste test wine to compliment your food choices. And don’t forget to bring your blankets to lounge on for this relaxing evening spent soaking up some of the most famous lines in literature.

You can even make this little event a stay-cation and buy a package that includes dinner, an overnight stay and tickets to the show of your choice!

Ponderosa Maintenance Tip: Check the Spin Direction of Your House Fans to Beat the Summer Heat!

July 18, 2012

This summer, make sure your fans are spinning in the right direction in order to produce the proper breeze to keep you cool. Most fans are reversible, with one direction of the spin forcing air down to create a cool breeze perfect for heat waves. When the fan spins the other direction, air is pushed up to distribute heat during the colder months of winter.

How do you tell if you fan is spinning the right direction to beat the heat in the summer?

1. Turn the fan on and stand beneath it.

2. If you feel a cool breeze, then you know the fan is spinning in the correct direction.

3. If you don’t feel cool air, then you need to change the direction of the spin.

4. To change the fans spin direction, there should be a switch on the base of the fan that can be flicked to rotate the fan’s blades in the opposite direction.

More often than not, in the summer months, the fan’s blades should spin in a counterclockwise direction or left. In the winter months, the blades typically should rotate clockwise. But you should follow the steps above to make sure you’re getting the most out of your house fans this summer.
